Exploring the Relationship Between Posture, Movement and WellBeing

Why this matters


Technology use can encourage prolonged postures that may place strain on the neck and upper body, particularly in children and adolescents. Working with researchers at Flinders University, Positure supported research examining whether gameplay designed around body movement could encourage a more upright posture while using a mobile device.


What was investigated


The study evaluated the potential for posture improvement through gameplay in 73 children and adolescents. Accelerometer data were collected while participants played a Positure game designed to encourage physical movement during interaction with a mobile device.


The researchers analysed this movement data to examine whether gameplay encouraged participants to adopt a more upright, vertical posture. This provided a structured way to investigate whether the mechanics of a digital experience could influence the way young people physically positioned themselves while using the device.


What the research found


The published study concluded that the game encouraged participants to adopt a more upright, vertical posture during gameplay. Analysis of the accelerometer data showed that the movement-based approach could influence the physical posture participants adopted while interacting with the device.


These findings provide evidence that the way a digital experience is designed can influence how people physically interact with mobile technology. They also support further investigation into how movement-based game mechanics might be used to encourage healthier patterns of device use.

Why this matters to Positure and Resannus


For Positure, this research provided an important early demonstration of the idea behind its technology: changing the way people interact with a mobile device can change the way they physically engage with it.


Positure replaces conventional swipe-and-tap interaction with body movement. In this study, that principle was tested in practice, with the research finding that the movement-based game encouraged participants to adopt a more upright posture during play.


For Resannus, the study provides an example of the approach we want to continue: taking a practical idea, examining it through independent research, learning from the evidence, and using those findings to inform the next questions we investigate.


What happens next


The findings from this work provide a foundation for the next stage of investigation: moving beyond posture alone to explore how movement-based digital experiences may influence other aspects of everyday wellbeing.


Resannus is continuing to explore how these experiences might be studied in real-world settings, including their potential role in helping people pause, reset, refocus and regulate during everyday life.
